Ireland June 2016 – Recap

June 30, 2016

Hey guys! If you follow me on my social media channels, you’ll know I spent last week at home in Ireland. I had such an amazing time and loved every single minute of it! I honestly think living away from Ireland makes me appreciate home so much more. Personally, I think I took everything Ireland has to offer for granted when I had it all right on my doorstep, but living in New York has made me discover a whole new grá for home! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved Ireland/being Irish, but it’s like I said in my ‘Being Irish in New York on St. Patrick’s Day‘ post, you develop a whole new level of appreciation when you move away.

This trip was a super special one, as I was home for my brother’s wedding. My brother Derrick and his fiancé were also home from Australia and my sister and her bf were home from London. This meant it was the first time all 9 of my siblings and I (yep I’m one of 10!) had been together for 6 years (did you see my Instagram pic?)!! I can’t believe it had been that long, but when we all live on different sides of the world it can be hard to get everyone together at the same time. So it was super nice to all be together for such a special occasion.

It was a jam packed trip and as always, the time absolutely flew by. When I was home last Christmas I think it rained solidly for the whole trip, so this time I wanted to make the most of my time at home. I did just that, kicking off with meeting my friends for drinks the night I got home. On Sunday, after a minor set back getting up 5 hours later than planned (whooops – I blame my 2am baking antics), but we did make a quick trip to Westport, around Westport House and we stopped off for an essential ’99… Always a must when in Westport! So the day wasn’t a complete right off.

Monday was a super early one. I was on the road before 7am for a trip to Dublin! Of course I indulged in a spot of shopping, finally got to meet some people I have been email friends with for the longest time and got to catch up with a lot my friends. It was hectic day spent running from the South side to the North side and back, but it was fab to be able to meet up with everyone.

Tuesday kicked off with a trip to the dentist… So much fun!! Ah no, it actually saved me A LOT of $$$$. Not only is dental work is out of control expensive in New York, I think dentists see you as a walking $ sign when you walk through their door, and you’ll leave thinking you won’t have a tooth left in your head in a few weeks. Thankfully my Irish dentist made me feel SO MUCH better about the situation and I think (/hope) my teeth are safe for a little while longer (happy dance!).

To finish the day, we took a quick spin to Cong. I just love this little village. It’s so pretty and of course there is Ashford Castle. So so stunning. One of my parts of the village is where you can be in two different places at once – where Mayo and Galway meet. This always reminds me of the movie A Walk To Remember.

On Wednesday we set off to climb Croagh Patrick. Even though I can see the mountain from my house, I’m ashamed to admit I had never climbed it. Unfortunately, I still can’t say I made it to the top. When we were half way up the clouds set in and then came the rain, so it got a little dangerous and we had to turn back. Next time I’m home with somewhat decent weather this WILL happen. The views from the first half we amazing, so I can only imagine what they’re like at the top.

On a side note… The climb to half way (not even the hardest part) made me realise just how unfit I actually am. Time to hit the gym in prep for my next attempt!

Thursday was the day of the wedding and I can honestly say I have never experienced anything like it. I felt like I was living in a Pinterest dream. It was such an amazing day and every little detail had been thought through to perfection! It was a super small wedding, held in a private residence (one of the most incredible houses I’ve ever been in – a real dream house) and I can safely say i wasn’t like anything I’ve ever experienced before. I think the unique setting really made it and is something that would be very hard to replicate.

My outfit got such amazing feedback on my all my social channels (here it is on Instagram), which was amazing to see. It was kind of an accidental outfit choice, but I’ll have a separate post on that with links to the items over the next few days.

Friday was a day to recover (obviously)! After partying well into the early hours, we chilled for the day before meeting friends for dinner and drinks in Galway city. Galway is one of my absolute favourite places in Ireland, so I always make a trip when I’m home. It’s where I spent all my many years in University too and I popoed into the Quad in NUI Galway for a quick look. It’s my favourite part of the campus and while I was there I realised it was 2 years since I graduated with my PhD! It’s crazy how time is flying by.

That pretty much sums up my time at home. Of course there was plenty of eating and drinking too. I think I ate enough Cadbury’s to do me for a few months (although I did bring A LOT back with me) and drank about 500 cups of tea. Roast dinner’s, my favourite bread, lots of coleslaw, good fresh food, I basically just ate everything.

Let’s not forget the shopping. I raided Penneys and New Look, and had some deliveries from Zara, Boohoo and Pretty Little Thing. You’ll see these pieces pop on my Instagram over the next few weeks…

As always, my time at home flew by way too fast. You would think that the more I travel home, the easier it would be to leave. But to be honest, leaving Ireland is never easy! I don’t know is it because I’m from such a big family and when I’m home there’s always so many people around that it make leaving and coming back to New York feel kinda lonely. Or maybe it has something to do with the fact I left and moved here on my own when I’m coming back on my own I’m subconsciously reminded of that? Whatever it is, it’s not the best feeling in the world, but once I get back over here I always get right back into the swing things and it’s almost like I never left.

Hope you enjoyed the snaps from home. Keep an eye for my wedding outfit post over the next few days.
