Royal Wedding 2018 – The Style

May 20, 2018
royal wedding 2018

Hey guys! After a long (almost 4 month hiatus) I am back blogging thanks to THE ROYAL WEDDING!!! If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen all of my many royal my Insta Stories all this week. I’m not sure if I’ve said this here before but I love history and I LOVE royal history, royalty, basically just anything to do with royalty tbh!! It’s a fascinating world of interconnections and traditions and EUGH… It just fascinates me!!!!!!

Anywho, instead of going through my favourite outfits (and disappointments) over on my Insta Stories (that would be WAAAAAY too long), I decided to make a return to blogging to do it here. I will have a blog post on my blogging hiatus at some stage next week too, but for now it’s ROYAL WEDDING STYLE TIME!! Whoooop!!! I’m breaking this out into multiple different sections because I think it’s warranted.

The Royal Family

First up is the Royal Family style. The British Royal Family are the most prolific hat wearers of all the Royal Family’s (the Spanish are the least and it kills me a little because Queen Letizia would look superb in more hats!!), so they’re getting a whole section to themselves.

HM The Queen, looked fab as always! At 92, she’s still some goer! I loved Camilla’s hat – Perfect for a Royal Wedding! I’m not going to include either of them here, because while their outfits were fab and perfect for them, I’m never gonna wear any of them. I’m also gonna bypass Princess Anne, because I’ve lost all hope for her tbh! She was so stylish back in the day, but the fact she still has outfits from the 70’s and 80’s on rotation will show you what I mean. I admire the thriftiness, but come on – You’re a millionaire!!!

Ok, back to business! In order of precedence, it’s straight to Kate:

The Duchess of Cambridge

royal wedding 2018 1

I’m gonna straight up say, this was one of the biggest disappointments of the day. My guess is that Kate wore a piece she has been seen in multiple times before so she wouldn’t take any of the attention away from Meghan – She did this with her choice of a muted tone outfit for her sisters wedding too, but that was new, bespoke, Alexander McQueen (and I loved it!)!!!
Kate, this is a Royal Wedding and if that doesn’t warrant a new spectacular outfit then I don’t know what does? I do love her new Philip Treacy hat though (whoop Irish designer!!). It was perfect for elevating the look, but my heart still yearns for what could have been.

I also do think she may not want to invest in a new piece until she gets back to her pre-baby weight. Not that she has any to lose! She looks AH-MAZING just a few weeks after having Prince Louis!

P.s. I love Princess Charlotte – She’s officially my favourite Cambridge baby!!

The York Princesses

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are definitely polarizing members of the Royal Family. I personally think they aren’t given enough credit. They take risks, which I LOVE!! And they are always mixing it up and trying new things. Beatrice would have even got my vote for best dressed at Kate and William’s wedding in her beautiful haute couture Valentino coat and dress if her hat didn’t look so crazy.

Kate definitely plays it kind of safe and sticks to the same style but these two aren’t afraid to try something new. Sometimes it works, sometimes it flops, but hey, at least they try and keep us entertained in the process.

Princess Beatrice of York

royal wedding 2

I am going to be controversial here and say I actually like this outfit. I love the Roksanda Illincic dress (Kate has worn this designer in the past too). Maybe it was a little OTT for a day dress but I do like it, especially compared to some of the misses she has had in the past. I like the  Stephen Jones headpiece here, I don’t know if something is kind of falling a little flat for me, but the dress definitely requires something on the simple, so I appreciate what she was going for, and for playing it a little safer this time round. Love her bag too.

Princess Eugenie of York

royal wedding 3

It was retro vibes from Princess Eugenie in Gainsbourg – A new bespoke British label. Guys, if you know me at all you’ll know I can’t resist 60’s style so this dress paired with a pillbox hat by Fiona Graham (insert RAISED HANDS emoji! – I love a good pillbox hat) and those Valentino Rockstuds, gets a thumbs up from me! The back of this dress has so much detail too, but it’s so hard to get a good picture. I also love her M2malletier bag (I adore these bags!!!) and her hair style too. Just everything. Check, check, check!!!

The Countess of Wessex

royal 6

Sophie, The Countess of Wessex is, in my opinion, the most underrated member of the Royal Family in the style stakes. She knocks it out of the park time and time again but we never see anything about her – which annoys me because I want to see all the pretty outfits, not just the pretty outfits Kate and Meghan wear. I’m not prejudiced when it comes to my royal style.

Her look today was very Sophie. She has worn Suzannah before (definitely at Royal Ascot) and has many many Jane Taylor hats. The outfit on its own was fab, but the gorgeous hat just took it to another level. Her hat wardrobe is something to be envied. So nice to see her fab fashion getting some coverage.

Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor

Royal Hats 7

Ok so here’s the thing about Lady Louise, as she is a male-line grandchild of a monarch, she is actually a Princess of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. BUT when her parents married in 1999 it was decided that their children would be styled with the titles of an Earl. Now I don’t know about you, but if I was entitled to use the title of HRH and Princess, I would be pretty pissed. Anyway, I’m just including this here because as far as I’m aware, this was Louise’s first foray into the world of hats and I just think she’s so cute.

Random fact – She was a bridesmaid for William and Kate in 2011.

Autumn Phillips

royal wedding 8

Autumn Phillips is the wife of Peter Phillips, Princess Anne’s son and The Queen’s oldest and favourite grandson (apparently). This coat dress looks to me to be an Emilia Wickstead number (I’ll update when I have been able to confirm). I love it! I think the colour is fab and it’s tailored to perfection. And so much better than her choice in 2011. Autumn is a dark horse in the style stakes. She has been bringing it with her outfits recently. I mean look at this hat from Easter Service!!!

Zara Tindall

Royal Wedding Zara Tindall

Zara is one of my favourites when it comes to Royal hats! She wears them so well and boy can she pick them. She has an amazing flair for picking the perfect hard to compliment and lift any outfit. I don’t know how she does it!

I’m gonna be totally honest and say at first glance today I didn’t love this look, but it has grown on me. She is heavily pregnant and I’m sure it’s not easy to dress a bump for a wedding, so she gets props for that, and her hat and outfit accessorizing are on point. If I was to have one qualm it would be that her Claire Mischevani embellished coat was a little on the dark side for a May wedding. Her hair was fab and showed off her hat to perfection! And let’s also take a second for all those memes flying around…

The Countess of Snowdon

royal wedding countess of snowdoncountess of snowdon royal wedding

I’ve spent hours trying to find a picture and details of the Countess of Snowdon’s outfit and it’s impossible. This is the best I can do. Serena is married to the Earl of Snowdon (the Queen’s nephew, Princess Margaret’s son) and she is generally pretty damn fab. I loved her hat today. Apparently, her dress was pretty fab too, but I haven’t been able to get a decent look at it or find out who designed it (hellllppppp me if you know?), so I’ll be back with an update when I do.

Also pictured in front of the Earl and Countess are the Duke and Duchess of Gloucestershire and behind them Prince & Princess Michael of Kent – The Duke and Princes are The Queen’s first cousins.

Lady Sarah Chatto

Royal Wedding Lady Sarah Chatto

I also spent hours trying to dig up the outfit details of Prince Harry’s godmother, Lady Sarah Chatto (daughter of Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister). FINALLY, I got them. Her dress is by Jasper Conran (there’s so many amazing British designers!) and the hat is Stephen Jones. I LOVE this outfit. I think it may be my favourite of all the royal ladies. That shade of blue is fantastic on her, the dress is so classic and that hat… SWOOOOONNNNN!!!

Honourary mentions have to go to Princess Michael of Kent (wife of the Queen’s cousin – Prince Michael of Kent) because I freakin love her OTT hats! She really believes in the bigger the better and always brings it with her hat game! Princess Alexandra of Kent too (the Queen’s first cousin), because she’s so cute and stylish at 81!!!

My favourite?

There was definitely a blue theme going on today and while I like all of the outfits, Lady Sarah Chatto stands out for me.

The Spencer’s

Lady Kitty Spencer

Royal Wedding Lady Kitty Spencer

Lady Kitty is the only Spencer gal worth calling out. Her outfit was absolutely outstanding. Pure perfection. Perfect tailoring, perfect length, perfect accessories, perfect Phillip Treacy hat (he got some business out of this wedding!), SO! MUCH! PERFECTION! I love it. It helps when you have Dolce & Gabbana on speed dial (she’s one of their current muses). Words cannot express enough just how much I adore this outfit. I think this is my stand out fav of all of the outfits!

Royal Wedding Spencer Family

Lady Kitty’s mother, Victoria Aitken (the former Countess Spencer), was also there. She wore a bloody fedora! I can’t! I just can’t.

Lady Eliza underwhelmed me and she was wearing an excuse for a fascinator. Her twin wasn’t there, so Kitty wins!!! HANDS DOWN!

Lord Louis gets an honourable mention for looking so dashing and getting the morning suit right. But then again, as the future Earl Spencer, he’d want to have it down at this stage.

I haven’t seen any pictures of Lady Sarah’s or Lady Jane’s children but there is no way they’ll out glam Kitty, so I’m gonna leave it here.

My favourite?

Do I even need to repeat myself? Lady Kitty!!!

The Suits Cast

After binge watching all 7 seasons of Suits in 2 weeks, I was very excited to see the cast rock up with their partners. Imagine me clapping like a seal… Yep, that was me!!

Abigail Spencer

Royal Wedding Abigail Spencer

Scotty aka Abigail Spencer in Alessandra Rich – LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! This is royal wedding style done right. It’s modern and vintage at the same time. Modest but so well fitted and stylish. J’ADORE!!!

Priyanka Chopra, is not in Suits but I’m just gonna get this out of the way. HATE!!! I was so disappointed with this. I don’t care if it’s custom Vivenne Westwood. It’s soooo something I would have expected to see on the Countess of Wessex in 2002! NOPE!

Sarah Rafferty

royal wedding sarah rafferty

IT’S DONNA! In Lanvin. And I love it! Those sleeves… You know I’m a sucker for a bit of dramatics!!!

Gina Torres

royal wedding gina torres

Gina, Gina, Gina!! Jessica Pearson would not approve of your fedora… And neither do I!! I actually do love everything about this out, except that bloody fedora. Imagine how fabulous a Phillip Treacy hat would have been with this outfit?!! Eugh, what could have been.

Patrick J. Adams and Troian Bellisario

Patrick J. Royal Wedding Adams and Troian Bellisario

Mike!! He looks so dapper BUT damn it he got the morning suit wrong. In a few different ways. He got the shirt and jacket right but morning suit trousers are usually gray with black stripes, checked are also permissible. The waistcoat is usually grey or light yellow (“buff”), but other pastels are also acceptable. For the tie, light gray with a subtle pattern is most common, but light colours are also good. So 2 out of 5. A lot of the Americans at the wedding got it wrong actually, but I’ll let them off. British upper class dress codes are tricky. You’ll see the differences if you scroll back up to the royals or scroll down and see Michael Middleton or James Matthews.

One thing I can’t let slide are Troian Bellisario’s open-toe sandals!!! GASPS!!!! I hope HM did not see those toes out is all I’m gonna say!!!!

Rich Hoffman

royal wedding rich hoffman

Great effort from Louis with the morning suit. Almost spot on!!!

Gabriel Macht and Jacinda Barrett

royal wedding gabriel macht Jacinda Barrett

Oh Harvey!!!! You so dapper!!! That’s a bit of a funny length for a morning coat though and I’m pretty sure you don’t co-ordinate a morning suit to your partners outfit, but you can do whatever the hell you want tbh!

Jacinda Barrett’s Emilia Wickstead outfit is fabulous. Pure, simple, understated, fabulousness. I need this in my life!!!

My Favourite?

Emmmmm, can it be a tie between Abigail Spencer and Jacinda Barrett?

Aristocracy / Friends

Carole Middleton

royal wedding carole middleton

I’m just going to crown Carole Middleton the queen of wedding style because this woman can do no wrong. Another stunning Catherine Walker outfit with Jess Collett hat!!! She wore Catherine Walker to both Kate’s and Pippa’s weddings too.

Pippa Middleton

Royal Wedding pippa middleton

I loved Pippa’s dress from The Fold. Perfect summer royal wedding dress. I didn’t love the shoes with it for some reason. The dress had enough going on without fussy shoes. Or maybe it’s just the length of the dress with the shoes?

Sofia Wellsley

Royal Wedding Sofia Wellsley

James Blunt’s wife is the granddaughter of the 8th Duke of Wellington, so if you’re ever wondering why James Blunt always rocks up to these high society events in the UK, this is probably the reason. I LOVED her Red Valentino dress and for some reason, I love these shoes with her outfit. I think they just work. I don’t know why I don’t like the similar nude pair with Pippa’s outfit. Maybe because she’s taller and her dress is way longer? It’s definitely a length thing.

David and Victoria Beckham

David and Victoria Beckham royal wedding

Let’s start with the positives, shall we? David! Firstly… WOW! Secondly, he got a suit that fits perfectly this time and he looks a million times better for it.

Victoria – Ok, so this is very VB. It is a beautiful outfit. It’s actually fab and she does look amazing but here is my problem – She wore a navy dress and hat to William and Kate’s wedding too. Like, come on VB!! You have more in you. I know you do!! It was a beautiful summer’s day in the UK and she looks like she’s going to a funeral. Give us dove gray or some other neutral! This just disappointed me so much!!

Serena Williams

royal wedding serena williams

Why didn’t she get a hat? She can’t afford it!! Although, she does look amazing – credit where credits due, but girl, the invitation said day dresses and hats. Probs to her husband for getting the morning suit spot on!!

Amal Clooney

royal wedding george and amal cloonet

Amal in Stella McCartney and custom Stephen Jones hat – LOVE! She’s so chic! I can’t deal. I kinda like that George went with a lounge suit. It’s easier to get right.

Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford

royal wedding carey mulligan and marcus mumford

I really love Carey’s dress. It has such a whimsical British feel. It’s not my favourite but I thought it was worth including.

Oprah

royal wedding oprah

Simply because she looks so happy. Her dress is fab on her. Not gone on the hat, but she looks so happy!!

My favourite?

EUGGGGHHHH this is a hard one! I love Amal, I love Sofia and I wanna give it to Carole because she just hit the royal wedding fashion nail on the head, but I think I have to give it to Amal here.

My overall favourite?

So it’s between Lady Sarah Chatto, Lady Kitty Spencer, Abigail Spencer, Jacinda Barrett, and Amal Clooney!! For me, Lady Kitty wins!!! I know most people think it should be Amal but I just LOVE Kitty’s outfit! When I saw it I was like WOOOOWWWWW, HOLY CRAP!! And to be honest, if I was to rank these in an order I don’t even think Amal’s would come second for me.

In the hat stakes, Lady Sarah Chatto is my favourite. Closely followed by the Countess of Snowdon.

Obviously there was a hell of a lot more extremely stylish outfits at the wedding too, but unfortunately for fashion lovers we only get to see the most famous faces and the outfits they wear. Hopefully we’ll get to see a lot more outfits over the next few days.

Hope you enjoyed this, I’ve loved sharing all my royal knowledge over the past few days,

Lorna x
