Last night saw the launch of Rihanna’s eagerly-awaited collection at London Fashion Week AW13. The launch of Rihanna’s first clothing line with River Island, was one of the most highly anticipated events of London Fashion Week.
The show was a colourful, printastic explosion that saw models pose on a set of nightclub podiums. This allowed five looks to be showcased at once. The models paused in each podium to showcase a series of outfits that are very much in the style of Rihanna. The show was packed with jersey dresses and skirts with thigh-high splits, midriff-baring crop tops and sheer mesh skirts.
Block colouring was a stand-out trend with black, yellow, red and grey featuring strongly throughout the collection. There was also great use of monochrome, print, and some sheer and mesh fabrics.
Model of the moment, Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn, the face of the collection, both took front row seats to support the singer. Rihanna then took her bow on stage in a black jersey minidress with her stylist, Mel Ottenberg at her side. Earlier, Rihanna had spoken about how her designs would have broad appeal: “The theme throughout this collection was easy, laid-back chic. Flirty, not very conservative, but I think everyone can wear this line. It’s not costume-y, not too sexy, it’s just very simple.”
The collection launches on the 5th of March and I must admit I am a fan, although I don’t think I have the guts to wear the thigh-high splits, or some of the sheer fabrics. My favourite pieces are definitely the black jumpsuit (I think I may have to buy this), the monochrome stripe shorts and the black and white print coulotte shorts. Take a look at the video and see for yourself.
Lorna. 🙂 xx
