Hey guys,

Happy Tuesday! How was your weekend? I think I’m just about feeling right after the All-Ireland on Sunday. To think we have to do it all over again in 12 days… I’m really not so sure my heart can take it! I am super excited though!!

Anywho… In today’s post I’m sharing some of my looks from my trip to Vegas for Labor Day Weekend (I’ll have a full round up post with what we got up to too). You guys know I love travelling, and one of the reasons I love living in New York is that it is such a good base for travelling around The States. As fun as it is to travel, I always have one important question when it comes to week trips that involve a flight… To check a bag, or not to check a bag?

For my last two trips (Vegas and San Francisco/Lake Tahoe), I’ve only brought hand luggage and I’ve been amazed at just how much I’ve been able to squeeze in. I’m talking outfits for 5 days, 4 nights and the beach/pool. In the past I would have checked a bag and thrown in everything including the kitchen sink, but by limiting myself to only hand luggage, I’ve found it’s made packing (which we all know I absolutely hate) so much easier. So I thought I’d share some of my ‘packing light’ tips with you…

1. Planning Is Key

First up… You’ve gotta plan. After all they do say – ‘Fail to plan and plan to fail!’ Okay that may be a bit extreme, but I’ve found when I plan out all my outfits by day and occasion, I’m a lot less likely to over pack and bring things I won’t wear.

Planning also means I can get the most out of the accessories and shoes I pack. For Vegas I brought one pair of heels and I wore them every night. By planning ahead I knew one pair of heels would be enough.

2. Make A List

I don’t know about you, but I do love a good list. Lists make me feel organised and safe in the knowledge that I won’t forget something important. Like I said, I hate packing and one of the main reasons I hate packing is I’m always afraid I’ll forget to pack something I really need (like the only pair of heels I plan on bringing with me). Having a list I can double, triple and quadruple check (I’m not even exaggerating here) before I leave the house makes me so much calmer and just makes the whole packing experience so much more pleasant.

It also means I don’t end up with those ‘just in case’ pieces in my bags that I 100% won’t need.

3. Roll, Roll, Roll

Whether you checking a bag or bringing hand luggage, you should always roll your clothes. It’s unreal how much space you will save/how much you fit in your bag by rolling everything.

4. Mix and Match

Packing versatile pieces you can mix and match is the best way to make the most of what you pack. When I went to Vegas I packed smaller items like skirts and tops (the one’s I’m wearing here are both from Dorothy Perkins) and mixed and matched them all weekend. For example, I wore this embroidered skirt out one night with heels and a dressy top and dressed it down another day with this top (from look 1) and some sandals to create a more casual daytime outfit. 2 outfits in 1… Well kinda!

5. Wear Your Biggest/Bulkiest Items on the Plane

My last tip is to wear the thing(s) that will take up the most room in your bag when you’re flying. Years of flying Ryanair taught me this one and it makes sense in fairness. I mean hand luggage space is limited and flights are usually cold anyway, so you’re gonna want to wrap up. If you can save some space (and $$$) by piling on the layers then why not?…

So there you have 5 super easy packing hacks that have saved some of my hard earned $$ on checking a bag and also saved me a lot of time packing and unpacking (I hate unpacking even more than packing!).

Do you have any packing hacks I need to know about?
