Do you have a special purchase? Something you bought to mark a special occasion or achievement? That one thing you can’t help but smile when you look at it and remember why you have it? For me that’s my Michael Kors bag (same style here & here). I bought it just over 2 years ago on February 3rd 2014 in Brown Thomas in Galway. It was completely impulsive and I had to be 100% talked into buying it. At the time I was just home from 6 weeks traveling the east coast of Australia, had no job lined up and really shouldn’t have bought it but hey… that’s what credit cards are for right?

4 years of work, stress, worry and tears (a lot of tears) came to an end and paid off on February 3rd 2014. I had my viva (where I defended my thesis – it’s latin for ‘by live voice’) at 11am and just under 2 hours later (it felt like 10 minutes) I was officially Dr. Ruane (I really need to use this more!!!). So it was a pretty big day in fairness…

Afterwards I was ready to drive straight home but my supervisor said there was absolutely no way I couldn’t mark the occasion without getting an extra special treat. You have no idea how much I love and adore designer stuff (my wishlist is far too long), yet the feeling of guilt I get when I even contemplate buying them is off the charts. But I decided to take her advice and treat myself. So off to Brown Thomas I went.

At the time I couldn’t believe I was buying a Michael Kors bag. After owning more than one too many Guess bags, I was never really into the whole Michael Kors thing. I thought a Marc Jacobs was the way to go. I knew the colour I wanted too, but everything about the Michael Kors bag was so much more beautiful. So after a lot of debating (and asking myself should I?) I bought it. I loved it then and I still love it just as much now. I love colour, and as my wardrobe has become more and more monochrome, I’ve been able to keep a punch of colour thanks to this baby…

But this bag does so much more than just add a nice pop of colour to a wardrobe of neutrals. This year February 3rd came and went without me noticing. I’m so disappointed with myself for letting the day pass without having even the smallest treat. It wasn’t until I pulled out this bag this weekend that I remembered. I remembered how I felt that day. How the feeling of being sick with nerves and feeling like I was going to pass out was replaced with absolute sheer relief and euphoria (once the colour had returned to my cheeks), and then the disbelief that I had actually (finally!!) finished. This weekend I found out just how powerful some ‘things’ can be! I know everyone says you should spend your money on experiences rather than ‘things’, and I totally agree. However, this weekend I realised that every now and again, when the occasion is big enough, the things might just have a longer lasting impact than the experience…

Do you have a piece that does the same for you? I’d love to know,

Lorna x

p.s. I went a little crazy that day and also put a deposit on my gold and diamond ring that you can kinda see in these pics. I wear this everyday and if I ever find myself feeling in over my head, a quick glance at it makes me remember “you got this!”

Aww, such a lovely reason to treat yourself! Well done you. I am looking into a bright bag myself, as I also dress in monochrome most of the time. That hot pink looks gorgeous against your neutral outfit.

Well done Doc! I love this colour too. Whenever I buy something expensive I’m just congratulating myself on being frugal and saving the cash for it xx Siobhan
