Happy New Year guys! It’s my first post and first Friday Five of 2017! I was brainstorming ideas for my first post and as you know with a New Year comes the usual New Year resolutions. As I said this time last year, I’m not big on New Years resolutions because I don’t think you need a new year to make changes in your life – you can do it at anytime of the year. If you’ve been following me for a while though, you will know I am big on goals. I set goals every year and to make them attainable I break them down even further into monthly goals (more on this coming up next week).
As the New Year started to creep up on me I obviously started thinking about my goals, but I also started thinking about things I currently do that I don’t want to take into with me 2017. Some are small things that can be easily tweaked. You know those things you always say you’ll do but never really do? Yep, those things! Some will be a little harder to stick to, but I think if I stick to these it’ll have quite a big impact. So for today’s Friday Five I thought I’d share them here to really make myself accountable…
1. Sitting Too Much
Did you know they say sitting is the new smoking? Well I have never smoked and damn it, sitting is not gonna be the thing that catches me out. I read somewhere before that “A body in motion stays in motion”, so my aim for 2017 is to sit less and get up and move more.
I pretty much sit Monday-Friday, with the exception of my commute to and from the subway of course. But I’m gonna make an effort to get away from my desk everyday. I’m gonna do this in baby steps, starting with adding a 15 minute walk break to my calendar everyday. I’ve done this here and there over the past year and getting out of the office during the week to move and get some fresh air makes such a difference to my day. It wakes me up and makes me so much more productive.
2. Coffee
LOL!! Ok I won’t be quitting coffee but I do want to cut back. When I moved to New York I didn’t drink coffee, now I spend well over $50 a week on it. But the reason I want to cut back is more of a vanity thing than a financial one. I mentioned before Christmas how I have quite a colourful dental history (in my top beauty finds of 2016 post), and tea and coffee are the number one culprits for staining. So I’m gonna take it in baby steps with this one too by cutting out coffee once a week, then maybe twice a week and we’ll see how it goes from there. It started with baby steps, so it makes sense to ween myself off it in baby steps too.
3. Saying Yes
To make someone else happy, but not make myself happy. One of my brothers told me a year ago that I have to start saying no more and I think I am starting to get what he meant…
I’m currently reading The Life Changing Magic Of Not Giving A F**k and this is something that has struck with me so far. The authors logic is long as you are a good person and don’t hurt someone else’s feelings, then it’s ok to do what makes you happy and what you want to do. I’m am 100% going to try to do more of this over the next 12 months.
4. Being Afraid…
Of change, of what people think of me, of what lies ahead. I know everyone worries about different things and we all have our own fears or things that scare us, but I think focusing on these too much can limit what we are capable of. Worrying is also the biggest waste of energy!
So what if you try something and it didn’t work out, at least you tried. For 2017 I’m going to try my best to not give any energy to my fears or stress about what I can’t control. I’m gonna try my best to be (somewhat) fearless and just go for it!
5. Wasting Time On Social Media
Social media is my biggest time suck and it needs to change. Working full-time and working on LC’s Closet (pretty much a full-time job too) means I really need to make the most of every second. But every single day, without fail I lose precious time to social media. Now I’m not talking about catching up on my friends or favourite people on Snapchat and Instagram. I’m talking about aimless spending hours on Instagram and then scratching my head wondering where the time went. This will be an interesting habit to try break, so let’s see how it goes…
